Hospitals need to work with local emergency service organizations to provide clear, accurate information during large-scale emergencies. To avoid disseminating conflicting information, hospitals that use a National Incident Management System (NIMS)-compatible incident command system, such as HICS, provide for an individual who will coordinate with other response groups and communicate with the media and other outside organizations.

Exercises are an essential component of an emergency management program and have three main functions:
VALIDATION- To validate plans, protocols, and procedures and demonstrate resolve to prepare for emergencies
TRAINING - To develop staff competencies, to give staff practice in carrying out their roles in the plans, and to assess and improve performance.
